FAQ
Straight answers.
When do I have to register for VAT?+
Mandatory once your VAT-taxable turnover crosses £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or is expected to in the next 30 days. Many businesses register voluntarily earlier to reclaim input VAT.
Can I register voluntarily below the threshold?+
Yes — and it often makes sense. Voluntary registration lets you reclaim VAT on start-up costs, equipment and software, and looks more professional to B2B buyers.
I'm not UK-resident — can I still register?+
Yes. Overseas sellers with UK customers usually must register as a Non-Established Taxable Person (NETP) from their very first UK sale. We handle NETP files as part of the flat £125.
How long does it take?+
HMRC currently quote 10–30 working days for standard applications. Complex or non-resident files can take longer; we track your case daily and chase HMRC in writing every 10 days.
What's the difference between Standard, Flat Rate and Cash Accounting?+
Standard reclaims input VAT on all purchases. Flat Rate pays a lower fixed % of turnover but you can't usually reclaim input VAT. Cash Accounting means you pay VAT only when customers actually pay you — great for growing businesses.
