FAQ
Straight answers.
When must I register for PAYE?+
Before your first payday to anyone earning above the Lower Earnings Limit (currently £123/week), receiving benefits in kind, or where you already pay another job. Sole director drawing a market salary → yes, register.
How long does registration take?+
HMRC issue the PAYE reference typically within 5 working days once the application is filed. We file the same working day you instruct us.
I'm the only director — do I really need PAYE?+
If you draw a salary above the LEL, yes. Below LEL you can technically avoid PAYE, but registering is often smart for NI credits, mortgage evidence and cleaner accounts.
Do you handle the ongoing payroll too?+
Registration is the one-off setup. Ongoing monthly payroll and RTI filings are handled by our Accountancy team — ask us for a monthly quote when your first hire lands.
What if I've missed the deadline?+
We still handle the file — and where appropriate draft a reasonable-excuse letter to HMRC to try to remove or reduce any late-registration penalty.
